A Little Wine With Your Barbecue?

by J.C. Archer on February 11, 2010

When coming home from Northern California on a recent road trip, I stumbled upon a wonderful restaurant in Napa. The sign on the door reads “Bounty Hunter Rare Wine & Provisions”. The name on the marketing reads “Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin’ BBQ“. Either way… Both names/descriptions are accurate.

If you happen to stumble across a sign like the one above you will certainly do your taste buds a favor by spending a meal there. The interior and atmosphere are a cross between cowboy and vintner. Upon walking in, the sights, sounds, and aromas are welcoming and its easy to feel right at home. And, now that I have sampled the food and beverage offerings, this has to be one of my personal favorite restaurants!

The staff are helpful and knowledgeable regarding the food and wine. Even one who may not have developed a taste for wine may find that with the proper pairing, a tasty experience is not far off.

Christina and I had only one day in Napa and knew that this would be our only opportunity to dine at Bounty Hunter, so we wanted to sample as much as we could during the visit. Both the food and wine menus offered us the ability to do just that. We decided to order the “The Bounty Hunter Smokin’ BBQ Platter”, which is described as

“The royal flush of BBQ! How sweet it is: cole slaw, pulled pork piled high, apple wood smoked brisket, and BBQ ribs so good you can’t help but go all in! Enough to be shared between friends.”  – from  the Bounty Hunter menu

I opted for a Firestone Double Barrel Ale, out of California… While Christina chose one of the recommended flights of wine suggested by our server. It was great! I got to have a beer as is customary with BBQ and taste all of her wines! Because she is quite the “wine connoisseur”, these types of situations tend to work in my favor… Lol!

The Bounty Hunter Smokin' BBQ Platter! Very Tasty...

As you can see, the platter is plenty of food… It arrived smelling so tasty that I forgot to take a picture of the untouched dish prior to diving in! It is served on a granite tile which is a nice touch. If only one could taste an image; maybe that technology is in the works, for now though you will have to take my word that the smokey slow cooked flavors come through and leave you wanting more.

The wines are equally impressive… In addition, there seems to be a mantra at Bounty Hunter about taking the mystery out of enjoying a good wine. Staff was highly informed and more that willing to answer any questions regarding wine. The best part was that they answered those questions without injecting a note of “arrogance” that so often comes with wine drinkers.

Do yourself a favor and get to Napa and the Bounty Hunter. You will be glad you did!
